Day 1: Sunday, 7 December

Getting Settled

We arrived in Bangalore close to 2:00 a.m. Immigration was relatively easy. We were then met by escorts from the university to get us to campus (a 45 minute drive). By 4:00 we were checked in and ready for bed. Everyone arrived in good shape and all luggage arrived too!

Most of us slept in today until close to noon. Hot water is only guaranteed from 5-8 a.m. and again in the evening so those of us late risers had a cold shower. That will wake you up. We all met at noon for a boxed lunch and to get oriented. Money changers were on hand to convert US$ to rupees, the rest of us used the ATM. At 1US$=60 rupees (Rs), it felt funny withdrawing 6,000 from the bank account!

Late afternoon (after naps for many), we enjoyed a musical Christmas event called "Magnificat" - a collection of singing groups from Christ University and the city of Bangalore. Our group had reserved seats in rows 1-2. It was nice hearing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" along with other holiday favorites. The auditorium easily seats 2,000 and has fantastic sound and lighting.

Dinner was "on your own" at the Forum Mall - a very western-style mall with a food court just up the street from the university. While you technically could go to McDonalds, KFC, or Subway we braved the lines and the aggressive customers (you had to barge in to get an order placed) to buy South Indian food - the most common item being a cheese masala dosa.
